I have not long finished reading the book 'Dogs' by Raymond and Lorna Coppinger.

I think it is brilliant.

The Coppingers are biologists who have travelled around the world carrying out extensive research on dogs.  It enables you to see dogs from a biologists point of view and explains evolution of the dog and why the 'pack theory' used by some trainers will only serve to confuse your dog.    (Eat your heart out JF, you should read this!)

I give this book a five star rating!

Hi Rottie,
I bought the book last summer but never finished it.  Roll Eyes
He (or they )has some fascinating facts but he  waffles and puts it in a boring way or maybe I have a short attention span. Embarrassed
I've Barry Eatons booklet . Dominance Fact or Fiction which disputes the dogs are wolf theory . I think it doesn't matter whether dogs are wolves. Dogs share so many genes and behaviours with wolves no matter what the breed but I feel  dogs should be studied as dogs in the domestic scenerio.
JF is my hero  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
No not really Roll Eyes  Smiley

HI Alison,

The book can be hard going.  I had to read a chapter and then take time to digest the info and sometimes I had to re read the chapter to get a good understanding of the information.

Just try reading little bits.

This book is very good and very important and so is Barry Eatons book. However they are quite academic at times and the point may get a bit lost. Which is why I felt I had to write a book which explined the dangers of "dominance theory" "leader of the pack " if mis-diagnosed. In fact I get very cross sometimes when authors with no qualifications come up with their own un-tested theories and encourage dog owners to follow them and all will be well. You wouldn't try to cure your granny of senility or your little girl of her snake phobia simply because you had read a book on it or saw someone do it on the TV. Each dog should be seen independently by a qualified behaviorist so you can be sure of the best care for your dog.

To find out more about my book which is full of interesting stuff and not a do it your self book, follow the links www.rosiebarclay.com
Other good books are How dogs learn and all books by Gwen Bailey. If you go to the APBC website they have a very good recommended book list.

All the best

I like gwen bailey but have only had a look at her books in the book shop.  I prefered the Puppy School book as the Perfect puppy as I remember uses the pack leadership theory.

Rosie, I wasn't able to download your book from that website but its available from the APBC website.
We appreciated having you as a member but we were hoping that you would join in with the spirit of UA to sometimes help and advise owners having problems with their dogs and promote positive reinforcement rather than just to post to mention  your book,

I'm reading the 'Coppinger's book too - it's part of my course reading and I have several copies of Barry Eaton's book because I lend them out - it's my 'here, read this' tactic  Wink

coppinger is brilliant, it is quiet hard to get your head round it. everything he says is so true and it makes you look at things in a completely different way especially the assistant dogs chapter.
