Thankyou for all your advice about Lola, we had a terrible week, last wednesday my husband found Lola dead in the backings behind our house he took her to the vets and they said she had been bitten by a dog and more than likely died of shock. We know which dogs they are, but nobody can do anything because it didn't happen on our premises. On Friday my window cleaner told me there was another cat in the backings, the dogs had got out again and killed Angel a lovely black and white cat who belonged to my neighbours who live further down the street, i had to go and tell them, their chidren were absolutely heartbroken.
The people who own the dogs were very apologetic but i don't understand how nothing can be done, if you know your dogs can be like this with cats how can you let them out of your garden.
All i can think of is how frightened little Lola must have been with these 2 dogs chasing her, we're absolutely devastated. Jo

Oh, I am so so sorry. How terrible for you, and the other people whose cat was killed. It is absolutely disgusting that those dog owners let their dog run free as they do. All very well being 'apologetic', they should DO something to keep the animal under control. It might be an idea to contact the Cats Protection or other animal charities to ask exactly what legal remedies there might be to force the owners to control the dogs, for the sake of other cats.
Meanwhile, I know you will have the greatest sympathy from everyone here - a dreadful, dreadful thing to happen.

I'm so sad to hear about Lola Surely the police or the local council can do something about these dogs and insist that thet are kept off the streets?

I've just found this DEFRA leaflet online - I think the paragraphs that's I've cut out below are particularly significant http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/cruelty/documents/ddogslawyouleaflet.pdfIf your dog injures another person’s animal, or an owner of an animal reasonably believes that they could be injured if they intervened to protect their animal from your dog, then an offence may be committed.
If you do not keep your dog under control, your dog could be destroyed and you could be banned from keeping a dog. Or you might be ordered to keep your dog muzzled when taking it for a walk. WHO ENFORCES THE LAW? The police Should be contacted concerning dangerous or banned dogs The local authority Where a dog is causing a nuisance or appears to be a stray

What a dreadful thing to happen. Poor Lola and Angel They must have been so scared and something surely has to be done about the dogs concerned. Apologetic!! As if that helps when your cat has died like that. I feel very angry about this and I'm sure you and the other owners are too. RIP Lola and Angel

Poor Lola and Angel I am so sorry for your loss.
I would print out 2 copies of the bit of the webpage which refers to the bits Jules posted and gove one to your neighbour and both of you go to the police.
It is the dog owners responsibility to ensure that their garden is secure enough for the dogs to be let out in especially as they are "hunting" dogs and have killed 2 cats. How disgusting of them to do nothing about it, I would definately take it further makes me bloody furious.

How horrible poor Lola and Angel. I would look into this further the owners shouldn't have let it happen once let alone to another cat.

I'm really shocked and saddened to read this as well. Certainly something must be done about those dogs right away. How long before they attack a child?

Hi and thankyou for all your messages, we contacted the police as did Angels owners we were both told that they could only do something if the dogs were on our property??? The owners of the dogs have now got rid of them, i have no idea to whom but they arn't around anymore, i hope they havn't just given them away without letting the new owners know what the dogs are like.
It was sad watching Charley looking for Lola so he could chase her around, and Angel was also his friend so he must miss her as well. I think Charley must have been aware of these dogs because for a week or so after the cats deaths he was very wary about going out and obviouly we were nervous about him being out.
Charley seems to be ok now.
Again thanks for your replies Jo x
